Journey of last Decade

 Our Journey / Timeline

  • 2015 — Foundation
Innovation Biologicals Private Limited (IBPL) was established at Venture Center, Pune — India's largest science business incubator — with a focus on bioprocess development for the biopharmaceutical and biologics sector.
  • 2015–2016 — Early Projects
IBPL began with two parallel research tracks. The first was a membrane-based cell recycle continuous fermentation project in partnership with Dhampur Sugar, converting diluted molasses to ethanol on a continuous basis to reduce effluent load and improve pollution control in the alcohol distillation sector.
  • 2016–2022 — HPV Vaccine Program
In October 2016, IBPL was awarded a project under the SBIRI scheme of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) to develop a recombinant yeast-based production process for virus-like particles (VLPs), intended for use in a quadrivalent vaccine against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) — addressing a significant public health need, with over 270 million adolescent girls and women in India at risk of cervical cancer, a disease the vaccine helps prevent.
  • 2018–2019 — Carrier Protein Development
IBPL expanded into novel recombinant protein expression systems in Corynebacterium diphtheriae, developing CRM197, a diphtheria toxin mutant used as a carrier protein in multiple approved glycoconjugate vaccines.
  • 2021 — Pandemic Response & Enzyme Production
During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, IBPL contributed to public health efforts by producing S1 protein using recombinant Pichia pastoris yeast. In the same period, the company also carried out focused enzyme work — extracellular production and extraction of a nuclease from Serratia marcescens, cloned in pET22b and expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3).
  • 2022–2023 — Cell-Line Optimization
  • IBPL undertook cell-line testing and optimization for extracellular expression and production of casein, broadening its recombinant expression capabilities.
  • 2023 — Present: Flagship Vaccine Program
IBPL's current flagship research program focuses on the production of exopolysaccharides (capsular and O-antigen polysaccharides) using Klebsiella pneumoniae, developed for use in pentavalent and decavalent vaccines against pneumonia — reflecting the company's continued focus on advancing vaccine accessibility through applied bioprocess innovation.
  • We are working on microbial fermentation for producing active pharmaceutical ingredients, where we optimize protocols for purity and higher yield of product. We are dealing with upstream and downstream fermentation of microbial cultures. Our core laboratory work involves fermentation, harvesting and purification of product by high throughput methods like TFF, HPLC and chromatography.
